Honoring Vance Akiyama and investing in Kauaʻi’s next generation

Yesterday marked the 8th Annual Vance Akiyama Memorial Doubles Tournament, an event that means a great deal to me.

Vance was one of my best friends growing up and one of the leaders for Kauai Junior Bowling. He was a member of the Professional Bowlers Association, was on the technical staff at Storm Bowling, and operated multiple pro shops.

When we lost Vance unexpectedly in 2004, our community was heartbroken. But in true Kauaʻi fashion, we’re coming together to create something lasting in his honor. Today, this tournament brings bowlers from across Hawaiʻi and the mainland together to celebrate his legacy.

What makes this event so special is that 100% of the proceeds support our junior bowlers, helping with jerseys, travel expenses, tournament entry fees, and other opportunities that help them succeed.

To me, this tournament reflects what makes Kauaʻi such a special place. We come together, we support one another, and we invest in our youth. Thank you to everyone who bowled, volunteered, donated, and helped make this year’s tournament another success. Vance’s legacy continues to make a significant difference in the lives of our youth every day. 🎳❤️
